Barr & Stroud

Barr & Stroud 8x42 Series 4 PC Roof Prisms Binocular:  Features a rugged construction combined with bright optics and high resolution eyepieces to make astonishing images. Barr & Stroud Series 4 (8x42) binocular are waterproof to a depth 1.5m of water for three minutes, a lot of time to retrieve them if you have drop them in a river or lake.

This requires a high degree of mechanical engineering excellence in the construction of the binocular which is evident as soon as you pick it up. This ability is further improved by the binoculars rubber armoured body which protects it from shocks. The body cavity is filled with nitrogen gas which keeps water out and also stops the optics suffering from internal fogging in unfavourable weather environment.

The Open Bridge has a number of advantages over the more traditional designs currently available. The most obvious is the ease of handling that this design allows; ergonomically it is a perfect fit with the human hand. This makes it easy and comfortable to use in the most gruelling circumstances and particularly with gloved hands.

The rapid focus mechanism takes the user from close focus to infinity in less than one turn of the focus control knob, which ensures that you can follow the action however fast it is happening

Service was excellent. I ordered the binoculars twice by mistake. I rang up and staff sorted out the problem promptly. Delivery was quick. As for the binoculars they are very good for the price. Considering I paid less than £60 for these including p p they are very good quality. I have very exacting standards when it comes to optics having been taking photographs for over 30 years. Clarity is good there is a hint of CA but only if I really look for it. The supplied lens caps and rain guard stay in place and the strap comfortable. The case is useful if packing away e.g holidays. We are not talking Leica Zeiss or Swaroski here but then again we are not talking £1600+. Very good value indeed and for a new starter in the birding arena on a budget. Highly recommended product and service from Microglobe. Excellent.

I ordered a pair of binoculars on Tuesday evening New Zealand time and they arrived the following Saturday morning - amazing! They were well packaged and I am very pleased with them.

This is my initial review of these binoculars. Only had them a short time - so opinions can change with longer use but first impressions are extremely positive.
Pros: very well balanced very clear bright images good field of view weight in the mid range for 8x42s I personally love the open bridge design nice carry case feel like they are well built and robust - time will tell on that point.
Cons: nothing much really - not convinced totally about the strap - but replacement straps are cheap anyway - and you can always fit a personal favourite.

I had done a deal of research when looking to replace my ageing bird watching binoculars - and the Barr and Stroud range looked a good compromise between affordability and quality.
Then it got even better! Microglobe are currently offering these Series 4s a price I can only describe as a steal!

Barr Stroud have recently uprated the Series 4 range to be ED ie use ED glass . I m only guessing - but I wonder if these standard series 4s will be discontinued hence the current low price . Don t let this put you off. A friend has the series 4 EDs - we did a comparison. We both agreed the EDs ARE better - but when we came to put a figure on it - we reckoned the improvement the EDs gave was slight - perhaps only 2 or 3 . Then I told him what mine cost - had to buy him a pint to calm him down!

In short - these are really £200 / £250 range binoculars and match anything in that price range - if you can find these binoculars around the £100 mark - you will be getting a great bargain and I don t think you ll regret it.

These binoculars keep getting better and better!
Excellent image quality very sharp due to the phase coated BAK-4 prisms.
Very easy to focus and the open hinge gives good grip for those with larger hands.
Nice and compact and lightweight yet still a good image from the 8x42 lenses.

Overall a great set of binoculars for the price.

As a first time buyer using Microglobe to purchase a Barr & Stroud Series 4 (8x42) PC Roof Prisms Binoculars, I can say that they arrived earlier in the post than I was expecting them to and the packaging ensured they were in perfect condition once opened.
Very satisfied with Microglobe and my Barr & Stroud Binoculars.
I would have no issues from this transaction in using Microglobe again.
A Happy Customer !
