Update on my original review.

Now that I ve used the head for a while I ve found that it has settled in nicely and the ball action has become quite smooth - very much improved on how it was when first used.
Also the problem about the locking lever has been solved. I have discovered that the position of the lever can be altered simply by pulling it out to release the splines and then rotating it to a new position before letting it go back in it s spring loaded . I now have almost 180 degrees of movement which is plenty to fully release the head. The little user leaflet that came with the ball-head did not say anything about this useful feature so I have to say that the product undersells itself !!

In conclusion the head is good value and works well but Benro should provide better user information and perhaps clean the ball after manufacture so that it works smoothly from the start.

The product is strongly made and works reasonably well. For the price it is reasonable value.
My main criticism is that the drag control knob and the ball locking lever do not quite work as well together as they could due to the large size of the locking lever it sticks out to one side . On both my tripods a travel one - Velbon - and a larger heavier one - Feisol the lever fouls the tripod after only one-quarter turn which means that I cannot fully free the head by turning the locking lever only. What I have to do is also loosen the drag control knob - not ideal as this might cause the camera to rotate in an out of control manner. If I don t do this the head remains pretty tight especially in the panning rotation.

The additional security feature is for me an important one and works well but if you are using Arca-Swiss compatible plate other than the one supplied you will have to remember to fit one of the little screws 2 provided in the plate supplied to the other plate - if it has a suitable hole; without doing so there is no additional protection and the camera could slide off if the plate locking screw is loosened carelessly. It is worth thinking this through and sorting it out because letting a camera drop off the tripod is a disaster!

Is the rotation smooth? Not very my other tripod head Markins is far superior in action smoothness and utility but it cost vastly more and is much heavier; you do tend to get what you pay for!
