Laser Range Finders
Laser rangefinders
were invented for a specific purpose.
They were designed to measure exact
distances where physical measurement is
not possible or extremely time
consuming. The reason a laser is used is
because its relatively low dispersion
makes it an ideal choice for this
purpose. How this technology works is
that pulses of laser light are sent out
towards the intended target or aim. They
are reflected back and go through a
receiving lens. By calculating the
conduction-response time of these
pulses, the software built into the
range finder calculates the distance.
There are so many factors that affect
the working and accuracy of the
laser rangefinder.
Primarily the pulse is of low strength
so as to avoid harming human eyes. Other
factors that will eventually decide the
final application of the
laser rangefinder
are the quality of the optics being
used, the circuitry and software
controlling it. Originally developed
with the obvious military purpose of
targeting tools, this product quickly
found numerous applications in civil
engineering and the construction
industry.
One of these applications is in the
sport of
golf.
Laser rangefinders
are being used in a widespread manner
nowadays on almost every fairway. For
the avid golfer, it is extremely
valuable information to know how far a
ball must be driven. For the starter it
is an excellent tool to gauge how much
swing must be applied for a given
distance.
When out looking to buy a
rangefinder,
keep in mind a few basic points. Always
buy the best possible optics that you
can afford to buy. This will be the
deciding factor on how accurate the
instrument really is. Look for
resolution distances in the 250 to 400
yards range. A good instrument should
tell you accurately how far your target
green is.
Of course, the regular rules that apply
to all electronic instruments also apply
here, like battery life, bulk and ease
of use. You do not want to buy an
instrument that is accompanied by a 200
page operations manual or is so
complicated to operate that you spend
more time figuring it out than you do
