As it is designed exclusively for the Nikon 1 AW 1, this lens is waterproof to 49 feet (15 m) and shockproof to 6.6 feet (2 m). When shooting underwater, the lens can zoom in and out utilizing the manual zoom ring and it supports auto distortion control for more natural looking underwater images. The Nikon lens delivers the fast shutter speeds needed for action shots or low-light occasions, such as at sunset.
With one aspherical lens element and one extra-low dispersion element, chromatic aberrations are minimized and a rounded, 7-blade diaphragm provides pleasing out of focus areas. The lens' minimum focus distance is 11.8" (0.3 m).
