The Nikon D40X Digital SLR Camera is a sister camera to the fashionable 6.1 MP Nikon D40 digital SLR, sharing a lot of similar features and mainly geared at first time users moving from a 35mm SLR, or upgrading from a consumer type digital camera into the world of digital SLR photography. To make the Nikon D40X even lighter Nikon has removed the AF motor from the camera body so that unlike the Nikon D80 digital SLR the Nikon D40X and the D40 only offer AF operation with Nikon's AF-S type lenses.

The Nikon D40x Digital SLR Camera powers up in a mere 0.18 second and reacts immediately to take up to 520 images for each battery charge. Nikon's user-friendly menu system characteristics built-in help menus and eight scene-optimized, pre-set modes to effortlessly set up the camera. Special in-camera image editing features permits you adjust images without the need for a computer. High ISO 1600 sensitivity make possible low-light shooting, while D-Lighting brightens dark pictures. Image Trim allows for original cropping and easy e-mailing. The Nikon D40X mode dial features eight handy Digital Vari-Program selections that automatically regulate settings, including ISO-equivalent sensitivity, white balance, sharpening, tone (contrast), colour, saturation and hue for results that match the intended shot.

Selections include Auto, Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, and Night Portrait. The Nikon D40x Digital SLR Camera offers a shutter speed range from 30 to 1/4,000 sec.
