It allows the lens to go closer to the subject than before and to achieve a larger image scale. It reduce the minimum focusing distance of the lens and make it able for macro photography. The depth-of-field is shallow so use as small an aperture as possible. Also protect the front lens element from dust, moisture and scratches.
