I wanted a fast medium range zoom and was in two minds to get this or the Sigma 70-200. The Nikon 70-200 2.8 was way out of my price range. After much consideration I decided to go for the comparatively lower tech, well established Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 and I'm so glad I did. This lens has been around since the early days of digital SLRs and as the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it. The build quality is reminiscent of lenses from the heady days of 35mm without a hint of plastic and there is a reassuring "Made in Japan" label on it. I have used it on both my D90 and my D7000 and it focusses quickly and accurately. The results are spectacular and there is no need for vibration reduction or optical stabilisation if you use a decent enough speed. We never had these luxuries in the days of 35mm anyway and managed perfectly well although to be fair we stopped taking pictures when the light began to fail which is when the new tech starts to kick in. The lens is reassuringly heavy which is synonymous with quality in my opinion but well balanced. It would be nice if it came with a lens hood but Microglobe stock these too and you get a superb leather look tubular case with "velvet" lining to keep your "precious" in. My photographic partner has the Sigma and it is a great performer but I'm glad I went for this, it's a fantastically crafted piece of kit. Of course if you have the extra £800 then buy the Nikon 70-200 2.8 but is it twice as good as well as twice the price? I doubt it.
