From a specifications point of view, the ED-X is a bit special. It pretty much ticks all the boxes - ED objective lenses, wide 7.5 degree field of view, waterproof, light weight (650g), close focus (1.9m) and multi-stage eyecups. Designed around a compact optical system to minimise overall length, the ED-X series 8x42 binoculars stand just 136mm high making them closer in size to many 8/10x32’s available in the market. The new micro-bridge™ assembly, wide wheel focusing and textured rubber armour combine to offer greater flexibility for positional grip with easy access for focus adjustment even under single handed operation. Weighing in at 650g the ED-X 8x42 WP Roof Prism Binocular is light in the hand as well as easy on the neck when carried using a traditional lanyard. A CN standard ED objective lens system increases light transmission over standard optical glass objectives in this class, while the wide field eyepieces 7.5° offer a panorama-like visual experience helping successful ‘track and trace’ for all types of wildlife observation.

From a "looks" point of view, the ED-X 8 x 42 is a bit daring. The first thing to strike you is the silver bridge - unusual on a 'quality'. However it looks fairly decent and isn't out of place on such a modern design. The rubber armouring is fairly standard and free of any weirdness, so that shouldn't put anyone off it either. The padded strap and integral removable lens caps are good quality extras, and a modern zipped neoprene case completes what is an attractive, modern package.
Comfort has been well catered for with the ED-X 8 x 42 the rubber armour is 'soft touch' and the eyecups are superb - with an incredible 4 positions on the 8x42. Coupled with a wide interpupillary distance range from 58 to 77mm, this binocular should be able to fit just about any face.
