The Pentax-02 Standard Zoom 5-15mm f/2.8-4.5 is the 2nd kit lens offered for the
Pentax Q. Its focal length range is equivalent to a 27.5-83mm lens in full
format terms. The Pentax 5-15mm F2.8-4.5 Standard Zoom lens for Q-series
cameras offers the flexibility of a 3X zoom in a very compact form
factor. It is ideal for wide to medium telephoto applications where zooming
flexibility is required. The f/2.8-4.5 maximum aperture is wide enough to
capture images in low-light situations, and the built-in neutral density
(ND) filter gives you a selectable 2-stop light reduction for greater
flexibility in creative exposure. The built-in lens shutter will sync with the
camera's built-in flash at up to 1/2000s. The 5-15mm lens will focus as
close as 11.8".
The lens features a total of four extra-low dispersion and low-refractive aspherical optical elements in its optics which helps provide a sharp image and reduce any chromatic aberration to a minimum over the entire zoom range. To photographers who have an interest in macro, it also offers a minimum focusing distance of 30 centimetres to simplify close-up photography.
The build quality of this tiny lens is very good. The outer barrel is made of some kind of alloy although the inner tub is made of plastic. The lens extends when zooming towards the WIDE end. The lens has no transport lock so it is immediately usable without the need to set it to working position. Even so we are talking about an extremely small size of merely 48.5x48mm. The AF system works both fast and virtually silently. Manual focusing tends to be difficult because the Pentax Q offers only a max. Focus magnification of 4x which makes it difficult to judge the accuracy of your focusing actions - this is not so much a problem of the lens but of the camera.
