The Canon EF 35mm f/2 Lens is a tiny, light and inexpensive Canon lens. It turns
out to be a good performer as well making this lens a good value. Build quality
on this 35mm prime lens is reasonable. A metal lens mount contributes to the 35
f/2's overall quality. Canon EF 35mm F2.0 IS USM optical Image Stabilization
(IS) to a rear focusing system and ring-type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) for
not only quick and quiet auto focus, but steadier shots in low-light conditions.
Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional colour balance while minimizing
ghosting, and full-time access to manual focus is provided while in auto focus
(AF) mode allowing you to quickly switch between the two as you need them.
The Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM feels solid in your hand, even if the outer barrel and the filter thread appear to be made from plastic. The focusing ring is ridged, rubberised grip band. The Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM boasts Image Stabilisation which Canon claims offers an advantage of up to 4 f-stops over lenses without a stabilizer. This is activated via the On/Off switch on the side of the lens. If the camera body supports it, Canon's IS technology is also able to detect intentional panning movement and automatically switch from the Normal IS mode to the Panning IS mode.
The lens ring-type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM), rear focusing system, and high-speed CPU; with optimized AF algorithms ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise auto focusing whenever you need it. Its circular eight bladed diaphragms gives pleasing, soft background effects, and a Glass Molded aspherical lens element make sure you'll have higher image quality and performance out to the edges of the frame. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are impressively well controlled with this Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM.
The Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is not a macro lens. The close-focus point is at 24cm from the film/sensor plane, and Canon quotes a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.24x for the lens. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. One of the reasons to buy a fast lens is to be able to isolate the subject from the background, which is normally very hard to do with a wide-angle lens. Canon was apparently very much aware of this requirement, as they employed an iris diaphragm with 8 rounded blades for a pleasing rendering of the out-of-focus highlights.
Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch modes or change camera settings. To improve accurate and sharp focus this Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Standard Prime Lens has optical Image Stabilization (IS) built-in which detects normal shooting or panning, and automatically switches to the optimal stabilization mode for each type. It also allows for shooting in darker environments, and lowering shutter speeds up to four stops, than you otherwise could get without IS.
