Imagine being able to focus a lens without it altering in size. Nikon's IF technology enables just that. All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight construction as well as a closer focusing distance. Also, a smaller and lighter focusing lens group is employed to make sure faster focusing. The IF system is featured in most NIKKOR telephoto and selected NIKKOR zoom lenses. The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G features a newly-developed optical system with 10 elements in 9 groups and incorporates Nikon’s exclusive anti-reflection Nano Crystal coat, significantly reducing ghosting and flare to deliver rich, high contrast images even under the most testing lighting conditions.
As is often the case, there is much more to how
a lens performs than the resolution alone. In this case, Nikon's new
85mm f/1.4 certainly confirms itself competent of producing images of very
high resolution when stopped down a little.
Even wide open, the images produced by this optic are more than fit for purpose.
In the centre the resolution is still good, and the falloff to out of focus is
very smooth and soft, leading to very flattering images. Moreover, on the plus
side, the lens is intelligent to focus accurately enough to make the bright
maximum aperture useful, even if a little care has to be taken from time to
time.
