Before buying this lens I had been relying on the DA 18-270 "super zoom" and a couple of old Tamrons for telephoto work. For wide angle and normal / short tele I usually use the HD Limited series lenses hence I expect a lot in terms of image quality. I bought the HD DA 55-300 primarily for long telephoto use and due to its WR protection. Having tested the lens extensively I am absolutely thrilled with it. It is sharp in the centre wide open but when stopped down even just a notch or two the whole frame is sharp enough. CA seems well controlled contrast is superb and distortion is minimal. Auto-focus isn t the fastest or quietest but very accurate and reliable while the focus ring is nicely damped for manual use. Overall build quality is excellent for a consumer zoom. At 55-100 wide open it is great for portraits and produces very nice bokeh but what surprises me is how well it performs at the long end. Shots of garden birds and the moon at 300mm show lots of detail that is well resolved by Pentax s high MP sensors. Using the necessary adapter it also works well manually focussed on the Q-series cameras. It s not the fastest piece of glass hence best in fairly good light but can be used effectively wide open if edge sharpness isn t a priority. In terms of general image quality this lens complements my Limiteds very nicely. At Microglobe s excellent price it is a real bargain and highly recommended. Service from Microglobe was to the usual high standard and I remain a happy customer!
